Another critical building block on the
road to Apollo was an earlier effort called the Lunar Orbiter
program. This effort sent robotic spacecraft to orbit the Moon
to map its surface, select a suitable landing site, and learn
some fundamental information about the lunar surface before
humans arrived. You may read about this program in "To
Behold the Moon: The Lunar Orbiter Project" and Destination
Moon: A History of the Lunar Orbiter Program.
